Previous studies have reported its potential benefit for improving V̇o2max; however, most of these studies focused on running or cycling as the mode of exercise. This study aimed to determine whether box jumping at different tempos met the physiological load necessary to be an effective HIIT exercise. Six female college students (age 20-23 years, height 160.3 ± 4.7 cm, body mass 59.1 ± 9.1 kg, V̇o2max 37.7 ± 2.8 ml/kg・min) participated in the study. Participants underwent a countermovement jump (CMJ) test and a graded cycle ergometry test to assess V̇o2max and HRmax. They then performed two box-jumping protocols on different days: one jump every 4 seconds (1/4s), and one jump every 3 seconds (1/3s). Heart rate and respiratory gases were measured during the two protocols. Box height was set at 150% of each participantʼs CMJ height, and both protocols included four sets of 30 jumps with 20-second passive recovery intervals. We found that %HRmax reached 95% in the 1/3s protocol and 90% in the 1/4s protocol. Average %V̇o2max was significantly higher in the 1/3s (78.8 ± 5.4%) than in the 1/4s (72.3 ± 4.5%), especially in the later sets. Time above 90%V̇o2max (T>90%V̇o2max) was longer in the 1/3s (110 ± 86 seconds) than in the 1/4s protocol (52 ± 63 seconds); however, there was no significant difference because of large inter-individual variability. However, T>90%V̇o2max increased with each set, and showed significant difference in the third set of the 1/3s protocol.
