We used two processes. First, we filmed experienced and inexperienced dancers performing dance improvisation. Immediately after, as they watched their filmed dances, we had them give oral reports about anything that came t otheir minds during performance. Second, we asked ordinary students to answer questions about their impressions of the filmed dances. From the results of these two processes, we analyzed the experienced performing body compared to the inexperienced body in performing improvisation. The results of the study are as follows: 1) The experienced dancers' comments were different from those of the inexperienced dancers. Experienced dancers tend to see improvisation as free encounters with the unknown, always with the potential for change and with numerous possibilities. 2) Experienced dancers tend to be aware of many different factors, such as their own bodies, their ideas, development of the dance, how they appear to others, and the external world, including the audience. They develop their improvisation by following their impulses and inspirations, and depending on the situation. Thus, they have the characteristic of being able to continue dancing even when they feel hesitant, simply by following through with their body movements. 3) Experienced dancers tend to have a good idea of how they look to others, and they control how they present their bodies, sometimes conscious of how they look and sometimes not. 4) Experienced dancers have the tendency of seeking fresh experiences and trying unique approaches under different conditions, and controlling the use of timing and the choice of movements.
