The genre, his piano works, is an important study subject as well as his songs, but often rendered quite literarily. This study tries to explain composition techniques in Arabeske op. 18, one of Shumann's piano works in his prime period for piano composition, by analyzing it without being swayed by its title's image. The analysis revealed some characteristic composition techniques such as, 1. Start with a dominant chord 2. Extended appoggiatura 3. Change of melody's tonality It was also noticed that these techniques are employed with completely basic harmony, which means Schumann puts meanings to phrases using these techniques after clearly indicating the tonality.
