Dance scholars remain undecided on Ivanov's contribution to ballet during the 19^ century and later. The present study investigated Ivanov's influence on the transition from 19^-century ballet to 20^-century ballet. Whereas Petipa attempted to separate story development and spectacular dance scenes in his works, and to emphasize the dramatic nature of dance, Ivanov attempted to tell a story through dance using the entire body. For Ivanov, the most important aspect of dance was the content and meaning of the story. Ivanov's works have two primary tendencies: first, they express a particular atmosphere or scene; and second, they express the feelings or psychological state of the characters through dance. These two tendencies are not readily apparent in Petipa’s works, though further comparison with Romantic Ballet and Romanticism is necessary. Elements of Ivanov's works are widely considered to have influenced 20^-century artists such as Mikhail Fokine and Antony Tudor.
