This study aims to consider Kawabata's view of dance by examining his novels, essays, reviews, and other writings in the period from 1929 to 1937, when Kawabata commented upon dance frequently, based on The Complete Works of Yasunari Kawabata (Shinchosha, 1980), which comes in 35 volumes and two supplementary volumes as standard texts. Kawabata came to be interested in Western dance after seeing a revue in which he first took an interest and through an encounter with a woman named Umezono in the show. From that point on, he explored dance revues and reviewed them in a candid manner as an amateur, which lead to his involvement with dance by writing novels based on his view of dance. Kawabata's view of art is clearly shown in an essay titled The Existence and Discovery of Beauty (1969). It can be summarized as: (1) grasping an aspect by its instinctive beauty, (2) putting a high value on tradition, (3) being sensible of ethnicity, and (4) considering virginity important. These characteristics completely correspond to his view of dance, in other words,the reasons Kawabata was attracted to classic ballet as performed by the bodies of young women with traditional and systemized techniques. In 1950, after a 13-year hiatus from writing about the dance, Kawabata wrote the novel Maihime. In this novel, we can clearly see his view of dance, a view that had not changed from the 1930s-the period when Western dance was introduced in Japan-as shown in his essays, reviews, and other writings during this period. These views include: performed by young bodies, taking the Cecchetti method of classical ballet to be important, and criticizing the fact that Japanese dancers learned Neue Tanz without acquiring the methods of classical ballet. Kawabata's work provides the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the situation regarding Western dance in Japan in the 1930s through the acute sense of a writer. Interestingly, Kawabata's views on dance may well provide a key insight into understanding Kawabata's views on art and the essence of his works.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_3_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.34349/00000923","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_3_publisher_35":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"日本女子体育大学"}]},"item_3_source_id_11":{"attribute_name":"書誌レコードID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AN00192838","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_3_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"02850095","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_3_textarea_4":{"attribute_name":"著者所属","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_textarea_value":"日本女子体育大学(助手)"}]},"item_3_version_type_18":{"attribute_name":"著者版フラグ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_version_resource":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85","subitem_version_type":"VoR"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"高橋, 佳子"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Takahashi, Yoshiko","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2019-08-21"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"nichijo_kiyo45-04.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"4.8 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"nichijo_kiyo45-04.pdf","url":"https://jwcpe.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/929/files/nichijo_kiyo45-04.pdf"},"version_id":"192e0138-a05a-47c9-a0b5-035dc03ad1fd"}]},"item_keyword":{"attribute_name":"キーワード","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"Yasunari Kawabata","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"dance","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Umezono","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Virginity","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"川端康成の舞踊観","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"川端康成の舞踊観"},{"subitem_title":"Yasunari Kawabata's view on dance"}]},"item_type_id":"3","owner":"4","path":["104"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2016-01-27"},"publish_date":"2016-01-27","publish_status":"0","recid":"929","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["川端康成の舞踊観"],"weko_creator_id":"4","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-07-05T08:37:07.421884+00:00"}
